AI nutritional coach: what it does and what it doesn’t
Searching for an online nutritionist often ends in a paid consultation every week or an app that gives the same response to everyone. The Fotorie coach is in between: an AI that knows your day, logs for you, and answers with the criteria of a nutrition center. And it knows where its job ends.
What the coach does
The difference with a generic nutrition chat is just one: the Fotorie coach knows your day. Before answering, it knows what you have eaten (what you have logged with photos, by text, or from the menu), what’s left of your plan, your weight and its trend, the training you have done or planned, your medication, your blood pressure, and your diet type. With that, it does specific things:
- Logs what you tell it. "I had Caesar salad and a glass of wine for dinner" and it logs it for dinner with its calories and macros. Without searching for anything.
- Corrects. "Yesterday’s lunch wasn’t rice, it was quinoa, and half the amount" and it changes yesterday’s log, not today’s.
- Suggests based on what you have left. "What should I have for dinner?" and it gives you options that fit the remaining calories and protein, with what’s on your menu or in your fridge if you tell it.
- Revises the menu. "I don’t like hummus" and it notes it in your preferences and changes future menu meals where it appeared. The same with allergies.
- Estimates your workouts. "I ran for 40 minutes" and it calculates the calories burned and adds them to the day.
- Takes your health into account. If you take allopurinol, it won’t suggest seafood with beer; if you have high blood pressure, it avoids salty cured meats. It checks what you’ve noted in Health before recommending.
- Talks to you every day. A daily message with what it has observed: what you did well, what’s missing, something to try. Without scolding for a blank day.
How to talk to it
Like with a person, through the channel that suits you best at any given moment:
| Channel | When it’s useful |
|---|---|
| In writing | Quick questions, corrections, "log this". |
| Voice note | When you’re walking or your hands are busy: it transcribes it and does the same as with text. |
| Voice call | A real-time conversation to plan the week or review progress. Available in Plus and Family plans. |
| Photo of the dish | It’s not a message, but it’s the fastest way to log: calories by photo. |
Everything the coach logs can be viewed and corrected in your day with a tap. It does nothing secretly.
What it doesn’t do
An AI nutrition coach is useful up to a point, and that limit is written in its rules:
- It does not diagnose. If you describe symptoms, it sends you to your doctor. It does not interpret analytics or tell you what you have.
- It does not touch your medication. It takes it into account to recommend food, but never suggests changing doses, stopping a regimen, or replacing it with anything.
- It does not go beyond healthy limits. If you ask it to go below 1,200 kcal (1,500 for men) or lose weight faster than reasonable, it won’t: it adjusts to what’s healthy and explains why. During pregnancy and lactation, there is no weight goal.
- It does not sell miracle diets. Detox, extreme fasting, "fat burning": these will not come from it.
- It sometimes makes mistakes. It’s an AI. It can misestimate a portion or misunderstand something. That’s why each estimate has its confidence level, everything can be corrected with a tap, and the app warns that its advice is indicative and does not replace a professional.
AI coach or online nutritionist
They are not the same and do not compete. an online (or in-person) nutritionist examines you, interprets your medical history and analytics, adapts the plan to a pathology, and accompanies you in a consultation every one or two weeks. That is worth what it is worth, and there are situations where it is what is needed.
The Fotorie coach does the daily tasks: what happens between consultations, or what never reaches a consultation because no one goes to a nutritionist to ask what to have for dinner on a Tuesday. It logs, adjusts, suggests, reminds about protein, reviews the week. And it does so with the criteria of Vitasane, nutrition centers in Seville since 2012 directed by Carlos Palomo, nutritionist: calorie floors, macro distribution, and medication precautions come from that consultation, not from an internet table.
| Fotorie Coach | Online Nutritionist | |
|---|---|---|
| Available | Whenever you want, in seconds | By appointment |
| Knows your day | Yes: meals, weight, training, medication, blood pressure | What you tell them in consultation |
| Logs for you | Yes | No |
| Diagnoses and adapts to pathologies | No | Yes |
| Interprets analytics | No (saves them for your professional to see) | Yes |
| Price | Free to start; plans from €3.99/month | According to professional, usually per consultation or month |
When to consult: if you have a diagnosed illness or suspect one, if you take medication that affects weight or appetite, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding and want monitoring, if you have had problems with food, or if your weight hasn’t changed in two months despite doing things right. If you want a plan with in-person monitoring, Vitasane centers will assist you in Seville, and Fotorie can accompany that monitoring between appointments.
How much you can use
Each message to the coach goes through an artificial intelligence model that is paid per use, so plans limit daily messages, not features. With the free plan, you get 3 messages a day (text or voice note) plus your daily message; Essential (€3.99/month) goes up to 15 and takes medication and blood pressure into account; Plus (€4.99/month or €39.99/year, €29.99 for the first year) gives 40 and 30 minutes per month of voice call; Family (€9.99/month or €89.99/year) is Plus with 120 call minutes per month. Logging by text, barcode, and from the menu does not count as a message. Details in plans.
Before talking to the coach, it’s good to know the starting figures for your plan: the daily calorie calculator, the calorie deficit calculator, and the macro calculator perform the same calculation as the app, for free and without installing anything. When you want it to handle it, download Fotorie for Android or iPhone.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Fotorie coach a nutritionist?
No. It is an artificial intelligence that works with the criteria of Vitasane nutritionists: calorie floors, macro distribution, and prudence with medication come from their consultation. It accompanies you every day, but it does not replace a nutritionist or your doctor.
How many messages can I send it?
Three a day on the free plan, plus your daily message. Essential goes up to 15, Plus and Family to 40. Plus also includes 30 minutes per month of voice call with the coach, and Family 120 minutes.
What does it do with my medication and blood pressure?
It takes them into account when recommending food and drink: it avoids seafood and beer if you take allopurinol, salty cured meats if you have high blood pressure, and so on with what you note in Health. It never diagnoses or changes guidelines; that is for your doctor.
Can it make mistakes?
Yes. It is an AI and sometimes it misestimates a portion or understands something else. That is why everything it notes can be corrected with a tap, each estimate has its confidence level, and the app warns you that the advice is indicative.
How is it different from an online nutritionist?
An online nutritionist sees you, examines you, interprets your analytics, and adapts the plan to your medical history. The Fotorie coach does not do that: it does the daily tasks (logging, adjusting, suggesting a dinner, reminding you about protein) for a fraction of the price. If you need the former, Vitasane will assist you in Seville.
