1,200 and 1,500 calorie diets are among the most searched for and the most misunderstood. They are not magic numbers: they are the minimums below which, in consultation, we do not put anyone without supervision. 1,200 kcal is the floor for adult women and 1,500 kcal is the floor for men. For many people, eating this little is too restrictive.
Before copying any menu, check your actual number with the daily calorie calculator. If it’s higher, eat more: you’ll still lose weight and sustain it for much longer.
Who it makes sense for
A 1,200 kcal diet can fit a short, sedentary woman with little weight to lose. A 1,500 kcal diet can fit a more active or heavier woman, or a small, sedentary man. For an 85 kg man who trains, 1,500 kcal is an excessive deficit that leads to hunger, muscle loss, and abandonment.
And there are cases where it never makes sense without a professional by your side: pregnancy and lactation, minors under 18, diabetes with medication, past or present eating disorders, and any metabolic disease. We say it as the nutritionists at Vitasane say it in consultation: the floor exists to protect you, not for you to use as a goal.
How the day is distributed
With so few calories, each one has to count. Three rules:
- Protein in every meal. It’s what curbs hunger and protects muscle. Aim for 100-120 g per day even if calories are low.
- Vegetables without measure. Fill your plate for very few calories.
- Just enough fat, not zero. A drizzle of olive oil, avocado, nuts. Without fat, there’s no satiety or vitamins.
1,200 calorie menu (3 sample days)
The dishes are from the app, with their approximate calories. Recipe pictures are AI-generated illustrations, not photographs of actual cooked dishes.
| Day | Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | Scrambled eggs with spinach (310) | Grilled sea bream with Mediterranean salad (480) | Miso soup with tofu and wakame (220) + fruit |
| Tuesday | Rye toast with smoked salmon (330) | Sautéed chickpeas with spinach (520) | Zucchini cream with turkey chunks (410) |
| Wednesday | Whole wheat toast with tomato and EVOO (320) | Tuna, egg, and potato salad (560) | Hake en papillote with vegetables (380) |
Each day is between 1,150 and 1,260 kcal. A natural yogurt or a piece of fruit in the mid-afternoon fits without a problem; a more substantial snack would exceed the limit.

What happens with diets that are too low
The first week, weight is lost quickly, almost all water and glycogen. The second, hunger intensifies. The third, fatigue, bad mood, and cravings for anything appear. The fourth, most people give up and regain what they lost in less time than it took to lose it. It’s not a lack of willpower: it’s physiology.
A moderate deficit (300-500 kcal below your expenditure) avoids this cycle. You can calculate yours and see in how many weeks you would reach your goal with the calorie deficit calculator.
How Fotorie does it
When you set your goal in the app, it calculates your calories based on your weight, height, age, and activity, and lets you choose the pace. If the pace you choose would cross the 1,200 or 1,500 kcal floor, the app limits it and explains why. From there, it generates a weekly menu with the recipes you see above, with equivalents to change any dish and a shopping list. You can see a complete seven-day example on the healthy weekly meal plan page.
In summary
- 1,200 and 1,500 kcal are floors, not universal targets.
- Calculate your actual number; for many people, losing weight well means eating more than that.
- With few calories, protein and vegetables are non-negotiable.
- Pregnancy, lactation, minors, and illnesses: always with a professional.
